Royal Mail announced yesterday that residents can now nominate a specific friend who lives nearby to receive their post in their absence. Hopefully this will reduce the number of red cards left on doormats to tell customers a package has been returned to the delivery office. Postmen and women are now more likely to deliver parcels first time as these named neighbours can sign for a parcel or receive a delivery too big for the recipient’s mail box.
To initiate this scheme customers are asked to visit their delivery office to nominate a selected neighbour and fill out a short form showing their proof of identity. This seems an excellent idea however it is now unclear whether this now means householders are now responsible for their parcel if it goes missing. Under the old system the Royal Mail was still responsible for the parcel if it went astray. Excluded from this scheme are special deliveries and items requiring a signature.
